Arkham Asylum Plot Story
On April 1st, Commissioner Gordon Informs Batman That Arkham Asylum Patients, Led By The Joker, Have Taken Over The Facility, Threatening To Assassinate Staff Unless Batman Agrees To Meet With Them. Among The Hostages Are Dr. Charles Cavendish, Administrator Of Arkham, And Dr. Ruth Adams, Therapist.
At The Asylum, Batman Discovers That Two-face’s Mental State Has Deteriorated As A Result Of Adams’ Therapy, She Replaced Two-face’s Trademark Coin With A Six-sided Die And Then A Tarot Deck, Each Time Increasing The Number Of Choices He Has as Opposed To Two Choices From His Original Coin In The Hope That He Will Ultimately Leave None Of His Choices To Chance. Instead, The Treatment Makes Him Unable To Make Even The Simplest Decisions, Like Going To The Bathroom.
The Joker Frees The Asylum Staff (except Adams And Cavendish) And Forces Batman To Play Hide And Seek, Giving Him An Hour To Escape Arkham Before His Opponents Are Sent To Hunt Him Down. Unbeknownst To Batman, The Joker Shortens The Time From An Hour To Ten Minutes After Being Pressured By Other Inmates. Across The Asylum, Batman Meets Clayface, Doctor Destiny, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, Maxie Zeus, And Killer Croc.
Batman Reaches A Secret Room High Up In The Asylum Towers, Where He Finds Cavendish Holding Adams Hostage. It Is Revealed That Cavendish Orchestrated The Riots And Batman Read The Diary Of Asylum Founder Amadeus Arkham When Asked Why. In Flashbacks, Elizabeth, Arkham’s Mother, Suffering From A Mental Illness, Suffers From The Illusion Of Being Tormented By A Supernatural Entity. After Believing He Saw The Creature Itself a Bat, Arkham Killed It To End Its Suffering. He Blocked The Memory, Only To Bring It Back After An Inmate, Martin “Mad Dog” Hawkins, Raped And Murdered Arkham’s Wife And Daughter.
Traumatized, Arkham Vowed To Bind The Evil Spirit Of “The Bat” To Witchcraft. He Treated Hawkins For Months Before Killing Him By Electrocution During A Shock Therapy Session. Arkham Continued Its Mission Even After Being Incarcerated In Its Own Asylum Using His Fingernails, He Scratched The Words Of A Binding Spell All Over His Cell Until His Death.
After Discovering The Diary, Cavendish Came To Believe That It Was Destined To Continue Arkham’s Work. On April Fool’s Day (when The Arkham Family Was Murdered), Cavendish Freed The Patients And Lured Batman To The Asylum, Believing He Was The Bat Arkham Was Talking About. Cavendish Accuses Batman Of Feeding The Evil Of The Asylum By Bringing Him More Mad Souls And They Fight, Which Ends When Adams Slits Cavendish’s Throat With A Razor To Save Batman.
Batman Smashes The Asylum’s Front Door With An Ax, Proclaiming That The Inmates Are Now Free. Batman Retrieves The Piece Of Two-face From Adams And Returns It To Him, Stating That It Should Be Up To Two-face To Decide His Fate In The Hands Of The Inmates. The two-face States That They Will Kill Batman If The Room Lands With The Striped Side Up, But They Will Let Him Go If The Unmarked Side Appears. Two-face Tosses The Coin And Declares Batman Free.
The Joker Says Goodbye To Batman, Taunting Him By Saying That If Life Ever Gets Too Hard For Him In “the Asylum” the Outside World, He Would Always Have A Place In Arkham. As Batman Disappears Into The Night And The Police Arrive To Take Control Of The Asylum, Two-face Looks Around The Room And It Is Revealed That She Has Landed On The Striped Side, Implying That He Has Decided To Ignore It. He Turns To The Stack Of Tarot Cards And Knocks Them Over, Reciting A Passage From Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland: “Who Cares About You? You’re Just A Deck Of Cards.”
